파오즈 산에서 자란 손오공은 할아버지 손오반의 유품인 사성구를 소중히 보관하고 있었고 그러던 중 드래곤볼을 찾아다니는 부르마와 만나게 되면서 부르마를 따라 드래곤볼을 모으러 가던 중 오룡, 야무치, 푸알과도 만나게 된다.
레드리본군도 드래곤볼을 노리고 있었고, 손오공은 레드리본군과 싸우던 중 인조인간 8호와 만나게 되면서 우정을 쌓게된다.
